Forty kilometres over the French border into Spanish
Catalonia, nestling in the Southern foothills of the Pyrenees, lies
the magnificent Bay of Roses,
the largest sandy beach at this end
of Mediterranean Spain. With a central nature reserve preserving its
natural beauty, fishing, the main industry of the bay, has traditionally
centred around the harbour of the small town of Roses at its Northern
end .
CANYELLES PETITES with its ‘Blue Star’
beach caters particularly well for those visitors who seek a quiet
base for their holiday. The road serving the village terminates only
1 kilometre further on and although there are several small bars and
restaurants, a paper shop, cash point and 2 small supermarkets, the
village supports none of the other more ‘in your face’ tourist activities
usually associated with holidaying in Spain.
LAS CASAS BLANCAS is a small upmarket
development overlooking the village of CANYELLES PETITES approximately
1.5 kilometres along the coast road from Roses towards France. Ideally
situated, with panoramic views both across the bay and towards the
mountains, LAS CASAS BLANCAS has a magnificent private pool, well
stocked gardens, tiled terraces and communal barbecue area, which
the owners are pleased to share with their visitors and guests.

INFORMATION ON Roses its Bay and THE
LOCAL AREA
Once the oldest town in Catalonia, Roses
is a living museum which retains vestiges of the many cultures that
have inhabited its 3000 year past, ranging from megalithic Dolmens,
through the 8th Century B.C Greek traders who named the town after
their home island of Rhodes, to the Romans who subsequently settled
in and developed the area. Many of these can be viewed when taking
one of the many ‘Tourist Train’ rides which start from the town.
Surrounded by Nature Reserves, which
include the internationally renowned bird and animal sanctuary of
the Aiguamolls de l’Emporda, the 2nd largest park in Northern Spain,
the bay of Roses provides facilities for every activity which its
visitors could require. These range from land based recreations such
as horse riding across the Aiguamolls, skydiving at one of the worlds
leading parachuting centres in Empuriabrava, micro-lighting, go-carting
or playing golf at one of the local area courses, to the many water
based activities for which the area is renowned.
The bay, which is particularly well
known for the quality of its windsurfing, is flanked by the rocky
cliffs and coves from which the Costa Brava derives its name; the
crystal clear waters of this coast provides superb opportunities for
underwater diving, either using your own equipment or with one of
the several local scuba diving schools.
There are also opportunities for sailing,
water-skiing, deep sea fishing para-sailing or for exploring the ‘Blue
Flag’ bays using hired jet skis or one of the many boats providing
local excursions, whilst those with children will probably find that
a day spent at the large local Aqua Park, with its many water slides,
pools and water based climbing wall will prove to be a must!
In addition, as well as providing year-round
opportunities for hill walking, mountain biking and rock climbing,
the nearby Pyrenees provide winter visitors with good snow skiing
only 1 ˝ hours from Roses.
Roses, whilst retaining its characteristic
Catalonian charm, provides a complete infrastructure of restaurants,
cafes and bars and a wide range of shops which provides for all the
needs of its 12,000 residents and 70,000 visitors. More shopping opportunities
can be found at nearby Ampuribrava which is reputed to be the largest
residential marina in the world, whilst more sophisticated shopping
requirements can be catered for by visiting either Gerona or to Barcelona
the capital of Catalunia; local bus companies provide regular trips
to visit these cities and view their attractions.
The town of Figueres, which is only
10 kilometres from Roses and provides rail access to France and the
rest of Spain is also well worth a visit. As well as shops comparable
in quality to those in Gerona, the town is also the home of the internationally
renowned Dali Museum; souvenirs of this artist who was born locally,
and who produced some of his most famous works at nearby Port Ligat
are widely available in the town.
